The Multiverse - A Marvelous Theory?

The Multiverse

We always think of our Universe as giant, humongous and huge. It really is, but like a Solar system is home to a planet, a Galaxy is home to many Solar systems, a Super-cluster is home to many Galaxies and the Universe is home to a Super-clusters. But have you ever imagined what is home to the Universe? Well, in today’s article we are going to discuss about the Multiverse which is home to the Universes.

Let’s start with the smallest things in the Universe to the largest.
As some of my readers may know that the smallest object in the universe is an Electron (there are even smaller objects but we won’t discuss them now). Now from here let’s start the size comparison -
Electron < Atoms < Molecules <Solids/Liquids/Gases < Comet < Meteor < Asteroid < Dwarf Moon < Dwarf Planet < Moon < Neutron Star < Planet < Dwarf Stars < Mega-Planet < Star < Stellar Mass Black hole < Solar system < Super-massive Black Hole < Galaxy < Local Group < Super Cluster < Universe < Multiverse. This shows how large the Multiverse can be and what lies outside that and where all this ends. Thinking and imagining about it is the thing that intrigues me so much about the Universe as most of it is beyond our imagination.

Hugh Everett was the first person to propose the Multiverse theory. The theory of the Multiverse is a very controversial topic. Hugh Everett discovered the Multiverse quite by accident. One evening, Hugh and his friends were drinking (of course not water), when Hugh suddenly came to the conclusion of there being a multiverse. Hugh wrote about his theory as his Phd work. I am sure something cosmic was there in his drinks. He proposed that quantum effects cause the universes to split.

Scientists and Astronomers imagine the Universe as a sphere just like stars and planets. The universe is constantly expanding and has a diameter of 92 Billion light years. We can also imagine that there are other spheres like our universe. Such alternate universes are called Parallel universes. I am sure many of you have heard of this term. Astronomers believe that Parallel Universes have completely different laws of physics for example – probably our neighboring parallel universe has 0 gravity and very low friction and the asteroids are zipping through their galaxies at the speed of light.

Interestingly, all the parallel universes in the Multiverse aren’t having different timelines, but everything happening in our world is going on simultaneously in other parallel universes with a few changes. Basically, anything you do, creates a new universe similar to ours but with different properties.

Fun fact – A collection of universes is called a Multiverse and a collection of Multiverses is called a Megaverse and this continues. Basically, there is no end. Collisions of two parallel universes can create giant holes or voids.

Alas, we will never be able to go outside our universe. This is so because of the ever accelerating expansion of the Universe. The boundary of the Universe is expanding at a velocity of 4 times the speed of light. If we ever want to explore outside, we need faster than light travel.

Our universe has a speed limit. That speed limit is 300,000 km/s or light speed. We cannot travel faster than the speed of light because, thanks to Einstein’s theory of relativity. We cannot travel at the speed of light because we travel in space-time and space-time travels at the speed of light. We will discuss this topic in detail in another article.

Before we conclude, I would like to say that writing this blog was very tough. I could not obtain much information from content on Youtube or Google. because his work in theoretical physics was very advanced for me. Hopefully, I can explain this topic in absolute detail when I have some intellect similar to Hugh's.

Well, that is the end of today’s article. Hope you enjoyed it. Do share this article on your social media handles.
